Artist Statement

I create portraits in acrylics and work rapidly to capture an intuitive sense of my subjects. Most of my pieces will start with sketches done of live models in studio classes, but once I start painting I do not stick too closely to the original. Sometimes a way a person is sitting will be of interest to me or a color will be appealing. I spend the most time thinking about the composition and how the angles of a person’s body fit onto the canvas.

The portraiture artists that I most admire – Alice Neel, Lucian Freud and Anne Rothenstein - can penetrate through the external and portray something more psychological and I hope to try to express this too.

Please feel free to contact me about available paintings or exhibition opportunities. I would love to hear from you!
